Kim Kardashian Targeted By Peta For Wearing Fur

26 Dec

Reality TV queen named and shamed in anti-fur poster…

Kim Kardashian is being targeted by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) in its latest anti-fur campaign.

The reality TV star has been singled out in a poster showing two sad-looking fox cubs, with the strapline: “Kim: These babies miss their mother. Is she on your back?”

And the 31-year-old comes in for extra criticism because she has previously engaged with Peta on the issue but has since been sighted wearing fur again several times.

Peta’s senior vice president Lisa Lange said: “Kim knows that animals on fur farms are beaten, electrocuted, and often skinned alive. We’ve explained it to her, and she’s watched a video expose that was filmed inside fur farms.

“When Kim is ready to put an end to her relationship with fur, Peta will be happy to take her discards and donate them to the homeless.”

There was no response from Kim at the time of writing.

  • On Friday, January 8, 2010, PETA, the “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals” group, released a new advertisement for their animal birth control campaign, starring ex-adult movie star Sasha Grey. The advertisement shows Grey in a sexy pose, with her bare back, looking at the camera. The ad sports the text:

“Too Much Sex Can Be a Bad Thing – Have your Cats and Dogs Spayed or Neutered”.

Together with the unveiling of the advertisement, PETA also released a YouTube Behind the Scenes video. On the PETA site, Sasha adds:

“I think spaying and neutering is incredibly important. … [I]t keeps the animals out of the shelters, and there’s too many unwanted animals out there already.”

The video shows Grey on a couch explaining why she participates in the PETA ad, and why neutering dogs and cats is important. The video also shows Grey while the photo shoot is in progress.

  • Sasha Grey is an active adult film stars, who won several AVN (Adult Video News) Awards, and has starred in hundreds of adult films. She recently featured in a regular Hollywood production, starring in Steven Soderbergh’s movie The Girlfriend Experience.

Stephanie Pratt Takes It Off For PETA

28 Apr

We have a love/hate relationship with reality stars. There are the Whitney Ports and the Lauren Conrads (love, love) and then there are the Heidis and the Stephanies’s (scared of, hate).

Stephanie Pratt has always seemed to think she was more famous than she actually is. When all you’re known for is being Spencer Pratt’s sister or getting fired from People’s Revolution, things can’t be that great for you. And then there are the uber unclassy DUI’s and constant drug and alcohol-related debacles. We wanted to like you, Stephanie, but you make it so hard.

Stephanie wants to design bags. We first met her when she had a class with Lauren Conrad at Fashion Institute of Design And Merchandising, but her fashion sense is questionable at best. Sometimes you have to close your eyes and wish she would just take off that dumb headband that spans her forehead.

It seems now we’re getting more than we’ve bargained for. Our wishes have come true. Pratt is taking off her LA trashtastic clothes. But unfortunately, she’s taking them all off for a Be Nice To Bunnies PETA campaign. I guess PETA thought their Bethenny Frankel shoot did so well, they may as well throw another reality star into the mix.

But unlike Bethenny, Pratt won’t be a billboard star — she’ll be the face for an iPhone application that will help shoppers stay informed and up-to-date on which companies are kind to animals. The application will have a database composed of all cruelty-free companies so you won’t make a decision that goes against your values.

“I think it’s really important for people to be informed consumers,” Stephanie said of her participation in the ad campaign. “I only wear fake fur because I don’t believe in skinning animals for fashion.”

While we can’t disagree with her statement or her involvement with the campaign — it’s actually one of the only seemingly genuine things we’ve seen the girl do — we must express our confusion: Dear PETA, why Stephanie Pratt?

Kim Kardashian Sparks Controversy Over Cat Photo ‎

20 Apr

TV celebrity Kim Kardashian says she would never do anything to harm an animal, after she was slammed online for posting a photo of herself on Twitter carrying a cat by the scruff of its neck.

The American socialite, who stars in the reality TV show Keeping Up with the Kardashians, posted a photo from a Sydney photo shoot yesterday with the caption “good kitty cat”.

The photo, viewed more than 153,000 times, was slammed by some of her online fans and animal rights group PETA.

“Love you but couldn’t you have held the cat a better way… :/,” said Strawbery182.

“I hope she only held that cat like that for a second. Because that can seriously harm the poor kitty. Don’t get me wrong. I love kim but I would never do that to the poor kitten,” CPID commented.

PETA Australia spokesman Jason Baker said Kardashian “isn’t the only person who mistakenly thinks that because a mother cat picks up her kittens by the scruff of the neck that a supportive hand under the rump isn’t needed”.

“But I’ll bet plenty of fans have let her know – nicely, we hope!” he added.

The RSPCA said it would be happy to advise Kardashian on “proper animal handling techniques”.

“While it’s not cool to scruff a cat, ideally Kim should be supporting the cat’s body weight,” a spokeswoman for the animal charity said.

“Neither Kim nor the cat looked comfortable and the RSPCA would be happy to advise her on proper animal handling techniques.”

Kardashian, who is rumoured to be dating Real Madrid footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, was quick to respond to the criticism, saying in an online blog that the cat was “not harmed in any way”.

“I have been getting negative comments regarding the way I was holding the kitty, but rest assured, the owner and vet were on set and showed me how to pick him up,” she wrote.

“I love animals and would never do anything to harm any animals.”

Kardashian, 29, is in Australia to launch a new Optus mobile phone. The mobile phone carrier is also a sponsor of RSPCA through its employee volunteer program.

An Optus spokeswoman said the photo shoot was not organised by Optus and it had nothing further to add to Kardashian’s reply.

Top 10 celebs who’ve stripped naked for animals

13 Apr

Animal rights activists PETA have earned a reputation for persuading stars to shed their clothes for publicity. Here’s our favourite ten.

In 1990, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) launched a new campaign with a different approach – a poster featuring The Go-Go’s, who wore only a banner reading We’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur.

The enormous positive feedback from the public and media made the organization realize the power that a lighthearted, sexy spin could have on serious, life-or-death animal rights issues.

Many people would turn away from images of foxes being killed for their fur but they’d line up (and log on) to see people showing their own skin to save animals’ skin.

Alicia Silverstone

Alicia Silverstone stripped off for the cameras to promote Vegetarianism.

The Clueless babe’s Peta advert was axed in Texas for being too raunchy.

Eva Mendes

Hotter than hot Hollywood babe Eva Mendes posed with it all off in the ‘I’d rather go naked than wear fur’ campaign for Peta.

Eva’s certainly not the shy, retiring type – she ran into a bit of trouble for flashing her flesh once again for a Calvin Klein perfume advert in which she briefly showed a nipple!

US television networks banned it for being too obscene.

Tamara Ecclestone

The daughter of billionaire Formula One mogul Bernie Ecclestone shed her clothes all in the name of animal welfare.

The heiress and TV presenter posed for a cheeky anti-fur photoshoot with nothing more than a strategically placed chequered flag.

Tamara Ecclestone said she wanted to support the campaign because fur was more about vanity than fashion.

Dita Von Teese

She’s unlike any teacher you’ve ever had, but her lesson is as easy as ABC.

Burlesque stripping queen, Dita Von Teese, stands at a classroom blackboard wearing her signature corset, in a captivating ad for PETA.

The animal welfare group was urging people to brush up on their “ABCs” (short for Animal Birth Control) by having their cats and dogs spayed or neutered back in September 2007.

Lucy Davis

Lucy Davis – one of the stars of hit comedy show The Office – appeared naked in an advertising campaign to stop the Ministry of Defence using bear skin.

The MoD uses real bearskin for The Queen’s Guards’ caps.

The actress appeared nude except for a teddy bear in a Peta campaign to get them to switch to faux bear fur.

The slogan on the advert read “Bare skin, not Bear Skin”.

Sadie Frost

Actress and fur-free fashion designer Sadie Frost marked London Fashion Week in 2006 by wearing her birthday suit.

Somewhat surprisingly she was photographed by rock legend and fellow vegetarian Bryan Adams – lucky fella.

“I don’t use fur in my collections”, Sadie explained. “It’s disgusting, and it reminds me of death and blood.”

Jenna Jameson

Taking one’s clothes off might not be too much of a stretch for a porn star, but Peta were certainly happy to have Jenna Jameson on board.

The normally blonde bombshell unveiled an image of herself in sexy underwear wearing a bikini and sporting a black wig at Mercedes Benz fashion week in Culver City, California.

Pamela Anderson

Pamela Anderson stripped down to her G-string in the window of Stella McCartney’s London boutique in the name of Peta.

Her message was to urge celebrities to stop wearing fur and embrace their own beautiful bodies.

Pammy is actually Peta’s honorary director no less.

Christy Turlington

Supermodel Christy Turlington became the first fashionista to appear naked for Peta.

She launched the “I’d Rather Go Naked” campaign in 1993 and became one of the group’s most public supporters.

Jamelia

R&B star Jamelia posed nude with a rabbit perched on her back in support of Peta’s anti-fur campaign.

The singer said: “The reason I decided to bare all for Peta was because I was educated about the inhumane ways animals used for their fur are treated, and I think it’s disgusting.

“I think if you have a heart, then you just wouldn’t wear fur.”

A headline to the picture said: “Be comfortable in your own skin, and let animals keep theirs.”

PETA raises concerns over Omar Vizquel’s plans

4 Oct

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Uh, oh. Omar Vizquel’s desire to try bullfighting in Venezuela this winter has landed him on PETA’s hit list.

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) announced Thursday that assistant director Dan Shannon has sent the Texas Rangers’ utility infielder an urgent letter, pleading with him to give up his bullfighting plans and to “please leave animal abuse out of your midlife crisis.”

“Omar is striking out by advocating cruel pastimes such as killing bulls and hunting anacondas,” Shannon said. “Participating in cruel and ludicrous activities overseas — activities that are illegal in the U.S. — won’t help Vizquel or the Rangers win over any fans here at home.”

There were several pointed jabs at Vizquel in the letter.

“We know that you have hit only one home run this year, but if you’re looking for a way to prove that you can perform, believe me, torturing an already weakened animal won’t impress anyone,” Shannon wrote.

PETA said in the announcement that bullfighting is illegal in the United States and that even before entering the ring, bulls are repeatedly beaten in the kidneys to weaken them and have Vaseline smeared in their eyes to impair their eyesight so that they have no chanceof leaving the ring alive.

“By the time the matador steps into the ring, the bulls are weaker than — oh, forgive me — a shortstop with a career OPS (on-base plus slugging) below .700,” Shannon wrote to Vizquel.

PETA also took exception to Vizquel’s anaconda hunt in his native Venezuela last off-season. But for the record, the anaconda, which was on a preserve, was released unharmed and Vizquel’s bullfighting plans only include practicing against half-grown bulls at a training facility.

“I haven’t seen the letter so I don’t know what it’s all about,” Vizquel said. “I won’t have a sword; it’s not like I’m going to kill the bull. I’m just going to have some fun with (the training).”

Bethenny Frankel “The Real Housewives of NYC” poses naked for PETA

Bethenny Frankel poses for PETA

Bethenny Frankel recently posed naked for PETA’s “I rather go naked than wear fur campaign.” During the photo shoot, shot on the rooftop of a NYC building, Bethenny sat down with TV Guide Magazine and stated her motivation to bear it all and how she felt about posing in the buff.

When asked how she felt about posing naked Bethenny stated, “Oh, I’m really excited. I think it’s a really amazing cause. It’s very simple to say to people, “You get to make a choice, and you can choose not to wear fur. It’s such a frivolous thing to do, and I used to do it. I wasn’t a crazy fur-wearer, certainly—I couldn’t afford it and I’m not that outlandish—but it really is so superfluous.”

She was then asked if she felt insecure about her body and posing naked Bethenny stated, “I don’t know why that part doesn’t bother me that much…it’s like, everybody has a body, everyone’s naked, I have the biggest pimple on my face right now and I don’t even care that much. I’m not a supermodel—no one’s expecting me to be stunning. I read the blogs—people say, “You’re the Corpse Bride, you’re too skinny, you’re this, you’re that.” It’s all good. I’ve always had a thick skin. I think it’s a light-hearted, fun thing for a great cause.”

Bethenny was then asked how she got involved with PETA and she stated, “I’m a huge animal lover, so it’s been a very organic process. I’m not on the top of any soapbox, but I think this is just a really interesting thing, and they came to me. They [noticed] that I’d gotten a lot of exposure lately—pun intended; because that’s nothing like the exposure I’m getting today. I guess they trust that I’ll be able to carry the message.”

The ad will be released this fall, so stay tuned!

PETA’s whale war over: Who won?

I blogged last week on PETA’s billboard ad in Jacksonville, Fla., calling a fat woman a “whale” and asking people to “lose the blubber” by going vegetarian. I was not alone in calling the ad sexist.

PETA has replaced the ad with something less controversial.

The new ad feels a little like passive-aggressive gloating to me. Did PETA lose or win with its gross ad?
