Sugababes star Heidi Range has a Marilyn Monroe moment as wind lifts up her dress at pre-Wimbledon party

13 Jul

It’s a scenario most women are familiar with – you wear a pretty dress to a party, but are caught out when the wind blows and lifts up your skirt.

But the incident must be even more embarrassing if you are one third of one of Britain’s hottest girl groups, and posing on the red carpet in front of hundreds of photographers.

That’s exactly what happened to Sugababes star Heidi Range last nightas she attended the pre-Wimbledon party at the Kensington Roof Gardens.

Wearing a pretty pale pink dress with silver embellishments and matching nude heels, Heidi was caught out by a sudden gust of wind which caused her to quickly hold the dress today to prevent any embarrassment.

The situation was reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe’s scene in The Seven Year Itch, where her white dress is blown up when she stands over a grate in the ground.

Sugababes fight Mutya Buena over name rights

19 May

Members of Sugababes have begun a legal battle over ownership of the pop group’s name after former member Mutya Buena applied to own the trademark.

Buena, a founding member of the group, applied to the European Union trademarks authority in November 2009.

Now the current line-up – Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah and Jade Ewen – have filed a notice of opposition, as have their record company, Island Records.

Range has previously told the BBC that their record company owns the name.

An Island Records spokesman said: “Contractually we are entitled to the use of the name Sugababes in connection with records and films. We are just protecting that right.”

But when the last original member, Kiesha Buchanan, left last year, Buena commented: “It just means the Sugababes have ended.”

In a letter to the EU body, Universal’s Island Records said that because of the “similarity of the goods and services” provided by the applicant – Buena – “there is a likelihood of confusion on the part of the public”.

Buena is currently working on her second solo album, following the release of her debut Real Girl in 2007.

If her application is successful, it could mean that she will own the rights to use the Sugababes name on goods such as CDs, DVDs and books.

The Sugababes line-up has changed several times since the original group was formed in 1998 by founding members Siobhan Donaghy, Mutya Buena and Keisha Buchanan.

Donaghy left in 2001, with Range replacing her. Buena left the band and was subsequently replaced by Berrabah.

And last year, it was confirmed that the last original Sugababe, Buchanan, was leaving the group – she was then replaced by former Eurovision contestant Ewen.

The Sugababes have enjoyed several UK number one singles, including Freak Like Me and Push the Button.

Their latest album, Sweet 7, debuted and peaked at number 14 on the UK chart, making it the group’s lowest charting album since 2000′s One Touch.

The Sugababes are currently recording the group’s eighth studio album.

Sugababes begin work on new album

23 Apr

The Sugababes have started working on their new album, their manager has revealed.

The group, which Heidi Range recently insisted are not splitting despite poor sales on their latest album Sweet 7, are reportedly going back in to the studio to start work on their eighth album.

The trio’s manager Mark Hargreaves has now spoken out, insisting that the group are in high spirits and are working on a new record.

Hargreaves told Now: “They’re a very happy group today. They can’t wait to get back into the studio and bring back that feelgood factor.”

The magazine also reports that their previous hit single ‘Girls’ recorded with former Sugababe Keisha Buchanan will be re-recorded with new member Jade Ewan’s vocals, and will be used to promote US department store JC Penney.

Hargreaves said: “It’s brought a massive resurgence of interest in the band over there.”

Buchanan is reportedly in talks about penning a tell-all book on her time in the band.

Heidi Range joins Zumba class

23 Apr

Yesterday morning singer Heidi Range joined crowds of Zumba enthusiasts for an intense workout ahead of her wedding to Radio DJ Dave Berry next year.

The 26-year-old member of the Sugerbabes was participating in a special launch class at London’s Virgin Active Moorgate with the dance craze’s founder Beto Perez. Perez, who is originally from Columbia, has flown over from Miami for a 12-hour tour whistle-stop of the UK. Five gyms participated, with some 300 members joining the workout throughout the day.

“It was really, really fun!” Range enthused afterwards. “I’m not usually very good at motivating myself so classes work much better for me. The Zumba class with Beto didn’t even feel like exercise because it was so fun, much more like a dance class.”

“My body weight can fluctuate quite a bit so I need to watch what I eat. Because I’m so short, if I put on just a couple of pounds it really shows so I have to be very strict on myself! The wedding’s next year and I’m definitely going to Virgin Active in the lead up.”

Asked how her preparations for the big day were going, Range added: “All the planning is going really well so far and I went out the other week with some family and spotted this gorgeous dress that I loved. I’ve still got time though so I’ll keep looking.”
