Lennon’s killer transferred to another NY prison

16 May

John Lennon’s killer has been transferred to another maximum-security state prison in western New York after spending more than 30 years in Attica Correctional Facility.

The Buffalo News reports  that 57-year-old Mark David Chapman was transferred Tuesday from Attica to the nearby Wende (WEHN’-dee) Correctional Facility in Alden, 20 miles east of Buffalo.

A spokesman for the state prison system says the agency doesn’t disclose why inmates are transferred to a new facility.

Chapman fatally shot Lennon in December 1980 outside the Manhattan apartment building where the former Beatle lived. Chapman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced in 1981 to 20 years to life in prison.

He was denied parole for the sixth time in September 2010. He’s eligible again for parole in August.

Noah Wyle Speaks on “Surreal” Arrest

27 Apr

Noah Wyle has spoken out on his arrest.

The Falling Skies star was handcuffed and taken into custody on Monday after joining a group of about 100 ADAPT members who were protesting in D.C., urging Congress to not cut any Medicaid benefits.

“I think they’re really proud of the old man right now,” Wyle told the Associated Press, referring to his estranged wife and two children, while waiting to be processed.

Adding that the experience was “slightly surreal,” Wyle joked about how both he and former ER co-star George Clooney have now been arrested in the last month.

I’ll “let George focus on the international; I’ll deal with the small domestic issues,” Wyle said.

Clooney has been active over the past year or so in expressing the need to rescue Sudanese citizens from an oppressive regime.

Mexican pop singer Paulina Rubio is charged in Miami with refusing to comply with police officers after a traffic accident.

When asked to get out of her car, Rubio allegedly refused, cursed at an officer and said she was nervous and that “all of you Miami cops are abusive.”

The officer placed Rubio in handcuffs. The report states that Rubio screamed for help and threatened to call her attorney.

Police say Rubio eventually calmed down and apologized. She is charged with refusing to obey a lawful command, obstruction of justice and disorderly conduct.

Nancy Kerrigan’s brother charged with manslaughter

12 Apr

More than three months after Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan’s elderly father died after an altercation with her brother, Mark Kerrigan is facing the upgraded charge of manslaughter in the case.

Initially charged only with assault, a Massachusetts district attorney’s office announced the charges had been upgraded due to the fact that the “defendant should have known that the cruel acts that he committed against his elderly father, including grabbing him by the neck with enough force to cause a fracture, were highly likely to result in substantial harm and endanger his father’s life.”

On Jan. 24 the father and son allegedly became embroiled in an argument over Mark’s late night use of the family telephone. The dispute is said to have escalated with Mark pushing, shoving and grabbing his father by the neck.

Mark spent exactly one month in jail before being released into his family’s custody, and is now living with his mother.

The Kerrigan family has stood behind Mark, and his mother, Brenda, who was home at the time of the incident, maintains that her husband died due a serious preexisting heart.
